Colorado Homes & Ice Damning Roofing & Gutter Contractors

Do you see icicles on your brand new roof or gutter system? Are you wondering if the installation was done correctly? Well chances are the installation was completed properly and you have what we call Ice Damning. Ice damning occurs after a heavy snow fall and freezing over the course of several days. When the warm air from your attic leaks onto the roof it causes the snow and ice to melt; which in turn causes the melted snow and ice to run down the roof until it reaches the overhang or the gutter system and then it refreezes causing ice dams and icicles. Having an Ice damn can cause damage to your roof and gutter system; which can lead to leaks inside your home. You may see water spots inside.
Contacting a local roofing or gutter contractor will not prevent future Ice Damning.
Do not get on your roof to assess the problem as that could be very dangerous.
Avoid trying to chip away at the ice as that could cause falling debris and cause serious injury; this could also cause damage to your roof.
Ice Damning can be prevented by providing adequate attic ventilation; making sure that that your attic insulation is not blocking you roof ventilation. You will also need
to seal all air leaks in your Attic to stop warm air leaking which is the source of the problem. You can hire a contractor that specializes in air sealing to do an in-home evaluation to find out where your air leaks are coming from.
Having these problems checked out even if you are not seeing Ice Dams right now can prevent unnecessary expenses in the future.
