As part of National Consumer Protection Week, (NCPW) March 7-13, 2010, the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, in partnership with the BBB Serving Denver/Boulder (BBB) and 7NEWS, will host a FREE document/paper correspondence shredding event on Wednesday, March 10th.

The free “Get the Shred Out” event will be held Wednesday, March 10th, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, in the outside visitor’s parking lot area of 7NEWS studios, located at 123 Speer Blvd. (corner of Speer and Lincoln).

Those who wish to drive up and/or drop off their documents for shredding will be directed to enter the 7NEWS visitor parking lot shredding area from the Sherman Street entrance only. They should have their paper items stored in boxes or containers and be ready for quick drive-up and drop-off. They will then exit from the Speer Blvd. side. This will allow for an efficient flow for those who wish to participate.

“We invite our many downtown and area postal customers to drop off their disposable documents,” says Postal Inspector Jeff Reed. “This is a tremendous opportunity to have those paper items containing important and identifiable information, including financial statements, personal correspondence and records, to be properly shredded and disposed of for free.”

Added Denver/Boulder BBB President & CEO Dale Mingilton, “destroying sensitive documents you no longer need is one of the simplest ways to avoid identity theft.”

News Director, Jeff Harris of 7NEWS noted the importance of shredding your personal documents also. “Identity theft is a major concern in our community. We’ve made it a priority to investigate and report hundreds of scams, rip-offs and violent crime associated with ID theft. I think this event provides viewers even more information and resources to protect themselves.”

This year’s NCPW theme — "Dollars & Sense: Rated “A” for All Ages" — highlights the importance of using good consumer sense at every stage of life, from grade school to retirement.

During NCPW, the BBB and its partners are promoting free resources to help people protect their privacy, manage money and debt, avoid identity theft, understand credit and mortgages, and steer clear of frauds and scams.

The BBB encourages everyone to visit the NCPW Web site, www.consumer.gov/ncpw, and the U.S. Postal Service/Postal Inspection Service Web site www.deliveringtrust.com, both of which are dedicated to fraud education and prevention. Also visit the BBB’s Web site www.denver.bbb.org for tips about making smarter decisions in the marketplace and to find BBB Reliability Reports on businesses.

About the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government – www.usps.com - the U.S. Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the third Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is one of the oldest federal law enforcement agencies in the country. For more than 200 years, Postal Inspectors have protected the U.S. Postal Service, secured the nation’s mail system and ensured public trust in the mail.
